Here are some photos of a guitar I had a hand in building for Steve Montague in 1975. I band-sawed a Jazz Bass in half, spliced in a plug of curly eastern hard maple and re-cut all the pickup and control holes for two sets of jazz bass pickups and two jazz bass necks (a left and right hand pair). Honest Ron’s Guitars of Oklahoma City did the finish. In its first incarnation, the lower neck was the leftie and it was strung like a mandolin 5 octaves low. Two Guild Starfire bass pickups were mounted in the neck positions and wired stereo against the existing Di Marzio jazz bass pairs. The second incarnation was set up for a 12-string neck in the lower position and retained the extra Guild pickup and two of the Di Marzios on the bass side. The third incarnation was set up as a stock-looking double neck. Over the years, Steve has gotten a lot of mileage out of my original splice job. By the way, the band saw on which I sliced up the donor bass is the same one which is in my amp laboratory today in Corvallis. -Niels |
